Some years ago, LUC sponsored a refugee family. They have sent an email update for those of you who knew them:
Hi everyone! Thirteen years ago, my family and I walked for the first time in Canada, because God put us on our journey, the Promised Land called Canada. But God also put us on our way, angels of the United Church, who put their effort and money to make us possible to come to Canada. Life wasn’t because we had to leave a country, family and our profession, but here we had the peace we need. After thirteen years, my daughters have managed to succeed in their education, Marcela started the university last year, Mariajose just started high school. My wife and I both have stable jobs and most importantly, we have a stable family based on God. Once again thanks for your support, to the pastor Tom Melvin and every member of Lakeview United Church, God bless you. Violeta, Jose Luis, Marcela and Mariajose
DEACONESS HISTORY SEARCH I am conducting a research project to record and honour the lives of United Church deaconesses. Were you a deaconess? Is there a deaconess in your family tree? I am collecting names and stories and looking for diaries, letters, pictures, writings and so on of women who were deaconesses prior to 1980. Their contribution as pioneers in ministry is important. Please be in touch if you have anything you could share. Caryn Douglas caryndouglas@shaw.ca 204.487.2076
Cleanout the Closet Coat and Snowsuit Drive
Clean and usable coats and snowsuits are required for several agencies. Snowsuits for children in schools in Calgary are required for Jacket Racket, a non-profit volunteer group. Winter jackets or coats for adults will be taken to several agencies providing clothing for the working homeless or those in need on the street. On Sept. 6 a box will be placed under the table in the Narthex to receive these items. They will be delivered by volunteers in our Church
