GIFTS FOR GLAMORGAN CARE CENTRE

As we approach the Christmas season and start thinking seriously about shopping for family and friends, let us also remember the residents of Glamorgan Care Centre. There are 36 men and 16 women now living at the Centre, covering a wide range of adult ages. Staff there suggest a variety of suitable gifts, and also suggest that for clothing, large or extra-large sizes (but generally not bigger than that) are more useful. Examples of particularly welcome items are socks, gloves, scarves, hats, underwear, pajamas, nightgowns/nightshirts, sweaters, shirts, belts, and suspenders (preferably wide). Other enjoyable items are small board games, cribbage boards, playing cards, and puzzles of 750 pieces or smaller, as well as toiletries such as brushes, combs, and nail polish. Sugarless candy and chocolates (nut-free) can provide a nice treat.

Also, small decorations or small wreaths for the residents’ doors or rooms are welcome.

Please avoid nuts of any kind, sharp objects, and candles. The gifts from LUC are an important and much appreciated part of Christmas for the residents at the Centre, many of whom do not have family or friends in the community. A box to receive your unwrapped gifts will be in the narthex from November 13 to December 11. For further information, please call Barbara Penhale at 403-249-9740.

Some years ago, LUC sponsored a refugee family. They have sent an email update for those of you who knew them:

Hi everyone! Thirteen years ago, my family and I walked for the first time in Canada, because God put us on our journey, the Promised Land called Canada. But God also put us on our way, angels of the United Church, who put their effort and money to make us possible to come to Canada. Life wasn’t because we had to leave a country, family and our profession, but here we had the peace we need. After thirteen years, my daughters have managed to succeed in their education, Marcela started the university last year, Mariajose just started high school. My wife and I both have stable jobs and most importantly, we have a stable family based on God. Once again thanks for your support, to the pastor Tom Melvin and every member of Lakeview United Church, God bless you.

DEACONESS HISTORY SEARCH I am conducting a research project to record and honour the lives of United Church deaconesses.  Were you a deaconess? Is there a deaconess in your family tree? I am collecting names and stories and looking for diaries, letters, pictures, writings and so on of women who were deaconesses prior to 1980.  Their contribution as pioneers in ministry is important.  Please be in touch if you have anything you could share.  Caryn Douglas caryndouglas@shaw.ca 204.487.2076

Violeta, Jose Luis, Marcela and Mariajose
